Heavy damage in Portland, St Mary, St Thomas
A trough across the central Caribbean continued to dump heavy rain on Jamaica Monday night and yesterday, resulting in extensive flooding and damage to property and infrastructure in several parishes, including Portland, St Mary and St Thomas.
Flooding was reported in Boundbrook, West Palm Avenue, and Stony Hill Road in Port Antonio, as well as the road leading to Manchioneal. At the same time, land slippage occurred at San San in Portland, while a work team from the National Works Agency started clearing blockage on the road to Kensington about 12:40 pm yesterday. The Bangor bridge in the Manchioneal area was flooded, and damage was reported in the Fruitful Vale area. A shop was destroyed at Grants Gate and 10 houses were affected. No one has been reported injured and there is no access to Chatsworth because of land slippage. In addition, some communities are without electricity. In the Buff Bay Valley there were a number of land slippage incidents along the road in Balcarees, Regale, Shamtame, and Bangor Ridge. In St Mary, parliamentarian Robert Montague reported severe structural and other damage to infrastructure, houses and crops in his St Mary Western constituency.“Right now, based on a preliminary assessment, it is not nice at all,” Montague told the
Jamaica Observer.“Considering the constituency suffered from heavy rains just recently, this latest deluge has further worsened the situation. Bridges have been damaged, roads have been rendered impassable, and the really difficult part is that farmers have lost a good portion of their crops,” Montague said.He also urged people to report any damage as quickly as possible and to stay indoors during rainfall. The bridge that connects Pembroke Hall to Carron Hall is damaged. The Gayle to Guys Hill road is damaged at several points and has come apart at Lucky Hill. The Dressikie to Oracabessa main road is damaged in Dressike, Crescent and Greenwood. In St Thomas, vehicular access was cut off to Font Hill, preventing motorised travel to Newland and Buckingham. A wall adjoining a river in the Font Hill square collapsed. In addition, a landslide was reported in Davis Mountain, blocking the main road, and a light pole was reported precariously perched over a house, leaving the occupants worried. The trough is expected to remain across the central Caribbean and Jamaica until tomorrow, the Met Office said.
