Murray captures Women’s Cup singles TT title
BRITTANY Murray beat unseeded Kelsey Davidson 3-1 to capture the second staging of the Kingston and St Andrew Table Tennis Association (KSATTA) Women’s Cup open singles final at the Excelsior High School Auditorium on Saturday.
Top seed Murray, who lost to Onika Francis in last year’s inaugural staging, outplayed unseeded Davidson who knocked out second-seeded Sheryl Green in the quarter-finals.Meanwhile, defending champion Francis was unable to defend her title as she is presently off the island participating in the Junior Olympic qualifying table tennis competition in the Dominican Republic.In the semi-finals, Murray had to battle hard to beat third-seeded Larissa McLaughlin 3-2, while Davidson also had a hard-fought 3-2 win over fourth-seed Solesha Young.Murray won her second title when she partnered with Green to defeat Jada Brooks and Saejha-Monee Rose 3-1 in the women’s open doubles final.Brooks and Rose stopped Gianna Lewis and Tsenaye Lewis 3-0 in their doubles semi-final match.Maureen Nembhard defeated Karen Campbell 3-0 to capture the Mother’s Cup singles final.Murray, seeded at the top. won her third title of the tournament in the Under-18 girls’ singles final where she defeated second-seed Green 3-0. Murray beat McLaughlin 3-1, while Green battled through five sets to beat Rose 3-2 in their respective semi-finals.Other winners were Davidson, who beat Fiona Li 3-1 in the Under-15 girls final, while Davidson beat Young 3-0 to win the Under-13 girls singles final.Liana Campbell was the winner of the Under-11 for girls contest, while Romieka Thompson won the Under-9 girls match-up.The Paralympic Open for the women’ was won by Sylvia Grant.President of KSATTA Stephen Grant hailed the competitiveness of the tournament.“The matches were very tough at times for some of the players which went on five sets. The entries were quite good as we got over 60 entries,” Grant said.Cash prizes were given to the top finishers in the Women’s Open Singles and Doubles, while trophies, medals, gift baskets, gift certificates and roses were part of the giveaways to celebrate Mother’s Day.
