KINGSTON, Jamaica — In an underwhelming performance, Jamaica after being behind for most of the match, hung on in the final 15 minutes to earn a 44-44 draw against Barbados last night at the National Arena.

The world number four ranked Sunshine Girls came into the contest as the overwhelming favourites against the number 12 ranked Bajan Gems, but found the going tough against an opponent not prepared to roll over and die. It was the first match in a three-match series between the two teams.

The first quarter Jamaica led 12-11. Barbados stepped up their game leading by four — 26-22 — at the end of the second. The Jamaicans cut the deficit in the third quarter and entered the fourth, just one goal behind — 34-45.

In a frenetic last quarter, players on both teams failed to land the decisive blow with the match ending in a 44-44 final scoreline.

For Jamaica, Shimona Nelson scored 31 from 39 attempts and Hansana Williams 13 from 15 attempts. For the Bajans, Latonia Blackman scored 32 from 33 and Sheniqua Thomas 12 from 13 attempts.
