UDC to carry out remedial works at Marie Atkins Centre for Labour Day
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Occupants and staff at the Marie Atkins Night Shelter for the homeless located at 65 Hanover Street, downtown Kingston, stand to benefit from improvements to the facility, which are to be undertaken by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) tomorrow.
Aligned with the National Labour Day Theme, “Restore, Preserve, Beautify,” the UDC will screed the concrete entrance to the facility, and carry out painting, and repairs to fixtures throughout the property.The shelter, named after the late Marie Atkins, former Mayor of Kingston and St Andrew, has been providing shelter for displaced and dispossessed individuals for the past 23 years.Currently, there are 97 registered individuals attached to the shelter, of which 20 are females. UDC will also be lending support to the National Labour Day Project which will see some restorative works being carried out at the Ward Theatre in downtown Kingston, under the auspices of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) and the Ministry of Culture Gender Entertainment and Sport (MCGES).Support will also be provided to the Papine Market.The UDC’s participation in Labour Day projects is a longstanding tradition and forms a part of the corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme.
