Need for an effective neighbourhood watch programme
Dear Editor,
With the increasing incidence of mayhem, death and destruction pervading our society we need the assistance of the police to arrest this twin-problem of crime and violence. This is why I am using this medium to call once more for the fast-forwarding of the renewed drive of the neighbourhood watch programme.
The society is in near-chaos and anarchy and we have to ensure that the rights and property of the citizenry are protected. The best way to ensure that this reality is met is to have worthwhile intervention of the citizens.
Incumbent coordinator of the neighbourhood watch movement, Kevin Patterson has to do something different in the communities to foster change of the current mindset. We will have to embark on strategic plans of action to ensure that our society is in tune with modern international policing strategic development. If we inadvertently lose sight of what is happening in other countries we can always consult the Internet and find out what are the best measures we can pursue to end up with the best safety measures for our circumstances.
The upsurge which once tore the moral fabric out of our society with crime through devious acts of cruelty and brutality must be seized and uprooted.
The influence of people of high standing can have a tremendous effect of alleviating the current situation which is having a negative effect on production and the serenity of our natives in all spheres of life. To have such sustainable plans of action in place we must ensure that these acts of criminality are stopped in their tracks. The neighbourhood watch programme can influence such a change.
The police must stop their pussyfooting and make concerted efforts to minimise the negative effects of mistrust which exist between the wider society and the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Certain poor practices have to stop to regain the trust which is obviously missing between the two sides. Police must have a positive effect on the society for once and should establish a creative framework wherein they can be called role models by the youth. The bad eggs in the police force are creating the atmosphere for their own demise. They should live by the mantra to serve, protect and reassure.
