#LondonDL: Thompson leads Diamond League after 100m win
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s sprint queen Elaine Thompson won the women’s 100m in 10.94 seconds (-1.4 mps) at the London Diamond League ahead of Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers in 10.97s.
Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonu was third in a season’s best of 10.99s.
Thompson, who was placed in lane seven because she was second in her earlier heat in 11.16s, trailed early but turned on the afterburners later on to snatch victory in a very close race.
“I just came out to execute. I don’t want to watch anyone else. I just stay in my lane and it doesn’t matter which lane it is, I just wanted to focus and get to the line,” Thompson said after the race, noting that she competed in sneakers rather than racing spikes.
Earlier both Christania Williams (11.34s) and Shashalee Forbes (11.36s) finished sixth and fifth respectively but failed to make the final.
Thompson now leads the Diamond League standing on 24 points with Schippers third on 15 points.
