Outside of structured programmes, summer is a great time to develop skills/talents and pick up new ones. Expose them to sculpting, recreational sports, langauges, books, art exhibitions. Speaking of which, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission has a visual arts exhibition at the Jamaica Conference Centre that’s open to the public.

Other activities in which you can get your child involved in are:

• Making potpourri from seasonal flowers

• Going stargazing

• Taking a road trip to the nearest beach or watering hole

• Visiting relatives

• Taking a day hike in the Blue Mountains

• Visiting the library

• Going fishing

• Taking photographs in nature

• Going to the zoo

• Reading a book…or two

• Going swimming

• Trying your hand at sculpting or pottery

• Planting a tree in your community

• Starting a collection of things from nature
