ALTHOUGH the 2018 Audi Q2 had its official launch on Wednesday, Damien Kerr, head of business for Audi at ATL Automotive, is saying its already a success.

The unveiling took place at the ATL Automotive’s Audi terminal on Oxford Road in New Kingston.

“We’ve already sold out our first shipment and are currently taking pre-orders for the second shipment due later in the year,” Kerr told Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.

The Audi Q2 will now start the four-ringed brand’s Q line of sport utility vehicles (SUV). Prior to this, the smallest was the Audi Q3.

Kerr said the reason for the instant success is the very nature of Audi’s newest SUV.

“The Audi Q2 is stylish, spacious and a practical crossover with a bold, confident, coupe-like appearance. It has the powerful stance of an SUV, and high- ground clearance,” he said.

This gives the Q2 a very distinctive look with a high level of versatility. While there is a bit of family resemblance on the exterior, the Q2 gets a more youthful and playful visual treatment, bringing forward the other element Kerr believes is the reason for the new model already being a hit — its customisability.

“The Audi Q2 is whatever you want it to be,” he said.

To match its new looks, the Audi Q2 has a palette of 12 exterior colours that can be chosen, on top of which the rear c-pillars that hark back to Audi’s Quattro race heritage — can be ordered in contrasting colours to add further visual spice. Optional is an interior LED lighting package that comes with changeable illuminated inlays. The choices continue in trim materials and colours to allow buyers to build it the way they want.

These choices build on two already excellent trim options: Comfort, for those just wanting the maximum luxury in the class; or S-line for those wanting a sportier flavour to their Audi Q2.

Starting at $5.6 million, the Q2 has a host of standard features and plenty of technological options. Practicality is a key element in this segment, as with its turbocharged engine and seven-speed DSG transmission; the vehicle is rated at 70mpg. Luggage space clocks in at 405-litres, with its upright cabin design giving plenty of passenger space. Progressive steering is standard, allowing a light touch when parking in urban areas, but direct feel when the pace picks up.

On the technology front, the Audi Q2 can be equipped with a range of Audi technology across various areas of the vehicle. For example, electronically adjustable adaptive suspension is available to expand the vehicle’s operational versatility. Hands-free park assist means the Q2 can put itself automatically into the tightest parking space. For the interior, there is the Audi heads up display that projects important driving information on the windscreen. Given its target buyer, the Audi Q2 can be equipped with Audi’s media box which allows app, phone, and wireless connectivity.

“It allows you to use apps like Waze for navigation, gives you access to online radio, and your email,” explained Audi’s head of business.

Kerr sees longevity in the continued success of the Audi Q2 and the Audi range of SUVs, as the newest addition will bring buyers into the fold that would have normally not thought it possible to own small premium crossover.

“Right now, only gasoline- powered Q2s are available, but this market will soon have access to the diesel models that will further the appeal of the vehicle,” he added.
