KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) says there will be further extension of opening times for its gate operations to facilitate the current backlog of containers as a result of the recent suspension of trucking activities from August 8-10 by haulage contractors.

In a news release today, the KFTL said the extended hours will see the gate operations being open tomorrow between the hours of 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm; with storage fees for the suspension period being waived.

“While the recent suspension of trucking activities has caused several delays, it is expected that with the extended period of operation, the current domestic throughput (250 to 300 containers received and delivered per day) and the cooperation of the Port Authority of Jamaica (security check) and the Jamaica Customs’ Agency (cargo clearance), the current situation should be resolved in short order,” KFTL said.

The organisation added that a technical switch from the “decades-old” Kingston Container Terminal Operating System to a state-of-the-art IT system (infrastructure and software), which took place during the August 6 weekend, will also facilitate the issue being resolved.
