Shashalee Forbes strikes gold at World University Games
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Shashalee Forbes won the women’s 100m at the World University Games in Tapei, Taiwan today while Tyquendo Tracey was fourth in in the men’s section.
Forbes, who anchored Jamaica to bronze in the 4x100m relay at the World Championship in London, secured Jamaica’s only gold at the event.
The GC Foster College student clocked 11.18 seconds (-0.3 m/s) and won easily ahead of Irene Sigagusa of Italy who was second in a personal best of 11.31s and Salome Kora of Switzerland was third in 11.38s.
Forbes, who won the 200m crown at the Jamaica Senior Championship, was just outside the Game’s record of 11.00s held by Germany’s Marlies Gohr since 1979.
Meanwhile, Tracey of the University of Technology (UTech) was fourth in 10.28s (-0.9 m/s) in the men’s 100m in a blanket finish behind homeboy Chun Hen Yang of Chinese Taipei, who won in 10.22s while Thando Roto of South Africa grabbed silver in 10.24s.
American Cameron Malik Burrell took bronze in 10.27s.
The 29th World University Games began August 19 and will end on August 30.
