Bail hearing next month for cop in custody since 2014
A bail application hearing has been scheduled for October 11 for Constable Collis “Chucky” Brown, who has been in custody for almost four years after he was implicated in four murders in the alleged police death squad in Clarendon.
Attorney Norman Godfrey, who is representing Brown, along with Carlton Coleman, requested the bail hearing yesterday after Brown’s double-murder trial was postponed until January 22 next year.
The case, which was ready for trial, suffered a delay owing to the addition of a new witness.
Prosecutor Caroline Hay, during her explanation to the court, said that the witness had only been located last month and although he has already given a statement and disclosure has been made to the defence, both parties still need to meet to agree facts that will not be disputed during the trial.
Brown, who was subsequently remanded, is being tried for the alleged murder of Andrew Fearon and Dwayne Douglas on December 13, 2012.
He is also facing a murder charge in relation to Robert Dawkins but was freed of the murder of Phaebian Dinnal in March. Additionally, he is also to answer to conspiracy to murder and wounding with intent charges.
Brown has been in custody since January 2014 despite numerous bail applications. Hay, who is prosecuting on behalf of the Independent Commission of Investigations, along with Ann-Marie Feurtado-Richards, said she will be opposing bail.
