Woman held with cocaine worth over $3m at NMIA
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police are reporting that detectives from the Narcotics Division yesterday took a Jamaican woman into custody for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act at the Norman Manley International Airport.
She has been identified as 35-year-old Julia Maragh of Cliff Boulevard, Hellshire in St Catherine.
Reports are that about 2:15 pm, Maragh checked in to board a flight destined for Miami when she was searched during which security personnel detected an abnormality. The detectives were notified and a rectangular shaped parcel wrapped in transparent plastic and containing 2.5 kilograms of cocaine found during a follow-up search.
According to the police, the drug has an estimated street value of $3,200,000.
Maragh is to be interviewed in the presence of her lawyer, and will be charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and taking steps preparatory to the export of cocaine, the police say.
She is scheduled to appear before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Wednesday.
