Dancehall artistes Alkaline, Popcaan and Aidonia, alongside roots acts Damian Marley and Chronixx, are nominees for the 22nd Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. They are nominated in the Best Reggae Act category.

The event will be held on November 29 in Leeds, England.

Alkaline has enjoyed a fruitful year with songs such as Impact, Pretty Girl Team, Fast, Golden Hold, and Extra Lessons. This is the deejay’s third MOBO nomination; he was previously nominated in 2014 and 2016.

It is Aidonia’s second nomination, his first having come in 2014. Currently riding the charts with Yeah Yeah Yeah, Aidonia’s other 2017 hits are Banga and IG Girls.

“2017 has been a great year so far. It’s a joy to see that all the work we have been putting in over the years, not just this year, is slowly paying off. We give thanks for the recognition and want to say respect the MOBO’s, the fans and everybody that played a part in making this happen,” Aidonia told the Jamaica Observer.

Having topped the Billboard Reggae Album chart a few months ago with his debut Chronology, Chronixx made an impact this year with a solid tour of North America and hit songs like Likes, Majesty and Skankin Sweet.

This is the third nomination for the 25-year-old singer whose prior nominations were in 2014 and 2015.

It is Marley’s sixth nomination. He won in 2005.

He also topped the Billboard Reggae Album table with Stony Hill.

Popcaan is gunning for his third MOBO, having won in 2015 and 2016. A favourite in the United Kingdom, he enjoyed a crossover hit this year with It Should’ve Been Me (with Naughty Boy and Kyla), as well as dancehall favourites such as New Level and Real Thugs.

The MOBO Awards were established in 1996 by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell. It recognises the year’s top achievers in black or urban music.
