Morris wins Alliance National Amateur Golf Champs
Sean Morris held his nerve to be crowned the Alliance National Amateur Golf Championship winner at Caymanas Golf Club on Monday.
Morris, and the leader for the first two days, William Knibbs tied (227) at the end of the tournament and had to go to a play-off round which Morris claimed.
“It feels special to win the nationals for the first time since playing golf. (It) was physically challenging as we had to walk the course for the three days and the course was rough due to the on-going rains, (but) I held my nerves against a really good opponent and I am happy to come out the winner,” Morris said.
There was a tie for third place between Justin Burrowes and Owen Samuda, but it went to Burrowes who had the better last day score. Samuda had to settle for fourth place. Their overall three-day score was 233.
Young Jonathan Newnham, who won the championship in 2016, was relegated to fifth place. Newnham tied with Morris and Knibbs on the first day (75), but had a disastrous second day (81) and seven over par (79) on the final day.
The Hoerman Cup representatives, who will represent Jamaica at the Caribbean Amateur Championship, are Morris, Knibbs, Samuda and Newnham.
“The association is very happy with the tournament over the three days. We now look forward to the Caribbean Championship where we expect to do well,” said Peter Chin, president of the Jamaica Golf Association.
In the Men’s and Men’s Senior 7-12 Category, first place went to Neville Carr (overall score 259), while Richard White (overall score 260) was second.
In the Men’s Super Senior 0-12, the winner was Dorrel Allen (overall score of 255), but there was a three-way tie for second with Bert Tomlinson, Michael Boyd and Dudley Wilson scoring 257 overall. But the placing went to Tomlinson who had a better last day.
In the Men’s Super Senior 13-24, Gordon Hutchinson won with an overall score of 278, while George Wright was second with a score of 287.
Michele Gabay walked away with the Ladies 0-12 trophy with an overall score of 259.
