My, how self-righteous and forgetful we are
Dear Editor,
I recall an incident similar to that which Member of Parliament Everald Warmington is being chastised, but nobody seems to remember it.
I found a reference to it in a letter to the editor of The Gleaner that those of us who seem to have a short-term memory might find instructive. It was published on November 20, 2012:
“It was Mr [P J] Patterson who warned some Jamaicans that if they did not vote PNP (this was a by-election so he would still be PM), they would ‘suck salt through wooden spoon’.
“It was during his time that material for road repairs was carried to North East St Ann during Shahine Robinson’s by-election campaign and taken up back when the PNP lost the election.”
I can’t remember the party hierarchy asking Patterson to retract the statement or anyone making a furore over it; not even the Jamaica Labour Party.
While playing tit for tat is never, ever right, and Warmington’s statement must be condemned, the quote is intended to show how conveniently self-righteous and forgetful politicians and people, in general, can become when it suits them.
