Western Derby
FROME, Westmoreland – Fresh from their first win of the season, two- time champions Montego Bay United (MBU) will be seeking their first win away to FC Reno in two years, when they play their second western derby in successive rounds of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) on Sunday, starting at 3:00pm.
Montego Bay United beat promoted and winless Sandals South Coast 3-1 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Sunday, and will take on a FC Reno team that have slid to fourth place, after drawing their last two games 0-0.
Sandals South Coast will continue their quest for their first ever RSPL win when they travel to Kingston to face a Tivoli Gardens team that have won back-to-back games with late goals.
After scoring only two goals in their first four games, MBU exploded for three goals on Sunday, two in the first 10 minutes, both by Bahamian international Lesly St Fleur, who was getting his first of the season, after missing all of the 2016/17 season.
The teams had contrasting starts in the season with FC Reno winning two of their first three, and are still unbeaten to be on nine points.
MBU on the other hand, just climbed out of the cellar and are in ninth place on four points, and with new found confidence, will be looking to climb further away from the relegation zone.
FC Reno have become somewhat predictable with Craig Foster scoring all four of their goals so far, while their defence is one of the tightest thus far, allowing only two goals.
MBU Coach Rod Underwood says that while they had to wait until Sunday in the fifth round to get their first win, he thought they had “turned the corner” a round earlier, ironically in a game they lost 0-3 at UWI FC.
Underwood argued that but for two mistakes from goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett — allowing two goals in the first eight minutes — they were toe-to-toe with UWI FC, who are currently in second place in 11 points.
Montego Bay United’s five goals have come from three different players, but Underwood thinks that as his team continue to gel as a unit, and with the number of new players in the squad, they will get it right.
On Sunday veterans Keniel Kirlew, Jermaine Woozencroft and Dwayne Ambusley all started and finished the game, with senior national representative Ladale Richie anchoring the MBU defence.
