Jamaica’s Sidrell Williams signalled a return to form with a series of strong performances, two of which were a school record at the two-day Yellow Jacket Invitational Championships over the weekend.

Williams, who is among a number of Jamaican sensations representing the Howard University Bison team, journeyed to the podium seven times on the backs of his personal best and record-breaking exhibition in the 100-yard freestyle and as a member of the 400-yard medley relay team.

The 2015 World Championships representative outclassed the field in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 45.22 seconds to open his account for the meet held in a 25-yard pool at the Randolph-Macon College in Chesterfield, Virginia.

That time lowered his previous best of 46.43 seconds, as well as the Bison school record of 45.31 seconds set by Jared Miller of the Coastal College Sports Association (CCSA) Championships earlier this year.

Williams then combined with Don Brazelton, William Smith and Alex Barnes to place second in the 400-yard medley relay butterfly in a time of 3:27.38 minutes, to lower the school’s old record of 3:27.84 minutes, also set earlier this year by a team that included another Jamaican Xavier Phillips.

The Wolmer’s Boys’ School alumnus then completed the freestyle sprint double, when he went under the 21-second barrier for the first time with a fast 20.79 seconds in the 50-yard event. That time was just outside of the school’s longstanding record of 20.78 seconds held by Chris Gayle since 1989.

Williams’ Bison ‘A’ team then placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.01 minutes, which was the third fastest time in the school’s history. And they later returned to yet again rewrite the school’s history books in the 400-yard freestyle relay when they stopped the clock in 3:10.09 minutes for second, with Williams anchoring the team with the fastest time of the relays in 45.09 seconds. It would go down as the third fastest time in their programme.

The lanky sophomore earned another second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in a personal best of 50.47 seconds, and is now within sight of the school record of 49.80 seconds set by Miller.

Williams and another Jamaican Nicholas Haughton then joined forces in the 800-yard freestyle, clocking 7:06.57 minutes that placed them third in the event and fourth overall in the school’s history.

The Bison team, coached by Nic Askew, topped the competition with 1333.5 points, just edging out Washington College, while the ladies placed fifth overall.

Along with Williams, Phillips and Haughton, the Bison team, which established five school records, 12 overall personal bests, 91 season’s best and one meet record, also includes Jamaicans Orane Garrick, Keith-Jordan Wilkinson and Leanne McMaster.
