Arnett, Cavalier square off at Stadium East
If you have an appreciation for good football, then the Stadium East is where you should be as two of the most exciting teams in the Red Stripe Premier League — Arnett Gardens and Cavalier — clash.
Going into the game, the Jamaica Observer has been reliably informed that players from Arnett Gardens were restive over non-payment of salaries for November and they have not turned up for training since Wednesday.
When contacted, no member of the Arnett Gardens management was prepared to go on record regarding the matter.
It is left to be seen what frame of mind the defending champions will be in when they turn up for the 3:00 pm kick off.
Arnett Gardens hold a two-point lead atop the league with 27 points, while Cavalier are sitting nine points adrift in sixth spot on 18 points.
Both teams played to an exciting 2-2 draw on November 23, where Arnett had to come from two goals down to earn a point at Stadium East.
It should be another humdinger of a game with Arnett Gardens boasting the likes of Fabian Reid (six goals), Vishunul Harris, Marvin Morgan, Damari Deacon, Lennox Russell (five goals), Steve Clarke and a fit again Lamar Nelson.
Cavalier, who have drawn their last three games, are a dangerous outfit and have some of the most talented young players in the league in national players Alex Marshall, Chevonne Marsh, national invitee and Dinthill High School star Khareem Parris, live wire Nicholas Hamilton, and with the tricky Nickoy Christian.
With the experienced defender Oneil Thompson leading the Arnett Gardens backline, Arnett should be able to get the better of Cavalier and continue their unbeaten run.
Meanwhile, second-placed Portmore United travel to Frome Complex to play promoted Sandal South Coast FC at 3:00 pm. Portmore are on 25 points, just two point behind the leaders, and if they win and Arnett Gardens fail to get three points, then they could go top of the league.
Portmore defeated Sandals 4-0 in the first round and are coming off a 5-1 demolition of Montego Bay United and will prove hard to deny. Sandals are struggling in 11th spot on nine points with just two wins in the league — both against Boys’ Town. Sandals remain a fairly weak team and will be hoping to bolster their stock when the January transfer window opens.
Tivoli Gardens, who have changed gears and are charging up the ladder — sitting in third spot on 22 points — will tackle the improving Waterhouse in seventh spot on 15 points in an intriguing match-up at Drewsland at 7:30 pm.
Tivoli have won three of their last five games and are in good nick, while Waterhouse seemed to have turned the corner since the arrival of Coach Donovan Duckie, winning their last two games and unbeaten in their last four.
When Duckie arrived at Waterhouse, they were in 10th with seven points from eight games, but rejuvenated, they have moved away from the relegation zone and are one spot away from a play-off position.
On November 19, Tivoli clipped Waterhouse 2-1, and revenge should be on the minds of the Drewsland outfit for the return match-up.
The stuttering The University of the West Indies FC (UWI FC), who are winless in their last three games, travel to Barbican Complex to face a wobbly Boys’ Town at 3:00 pm. UWI are in fourth spot on 20 points, while Boys’ Town are rock bottom on seven points, and again, caught in another round in their fight to avoid relegation.
The “Red Brigades” have won just once in 13 games, with that victory coming in the second match of the competition when they edged Montego Bay United 1-0 on October 2. Since then they have gone 11 games without a win, losing seven times in the process.
UWI have not won in their last three games and they, too, are looking for that crucial win.
The Harbour View fraternity anxiously awaits the inclusion of the high school stars to turn the struggling club into the force they once were as they travel to take on Humble Lion for a 3:00 pm assignment.
The Stars of the East will be searching for their first win since November 12. Both Harbour View and Humble Lion are on 14 points in ninth and 10th spots, respectively.
Both teams played to 0-0 draw in the first round.
Harbour View are struggling to score goals, finding the back of the net only eight times from 13 matches. Only Sandals have scored less with seven goals. Nevertheless, it should be a hard-fought game, but if Harbour View is able to include high school goal machines Rashawn Mackison of Kingston College or Nique Daley of Clarendon College upfront, their goalscoring drought could come to an end.
Tomorrow, former champions Montego bay United host FC Reno at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, starting at 8:35 pm. Montego Bay are in eighth spot on 15 points, while Reno are higher up the table in fifth spot on 20 points.
