Maverley, Molynes clash in Super League curtain-raiser
Maverley -Hughenden and Molynes United will clash in the feature game of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Magnum Super League in today’s season opener at Constant Spring Complex, starting at 6:00 pm.
In the first game, last season’s Major League champions Mountain View will meet Central Kingston FC, while Maverley-Hughenden, who were relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) last season, will tackle Molynes United in a match set to start at 8:00 pm.
Maverley-Hughenden won the Super League title in 2016, but enjoyed only one season in the RSPL before being regulated to the Super League
The club’s aim is to return quickly to the nation’s top flight.
“The aim is to return to the Premier League in just one season. We are fully aware that it won’t be easy [as] there are Molynes United, Barbican, Browns Town and Santos to contend with.
“I have heard about the Molynes team as they have some former Maverley players and they are the overwhelming favourites. This early match must be good for the league. With better players in the Super League, it can only raise the profile and the standard of the game,” said Coach ByJeon Thomas.
He will look to Captain Raymond Williamson, Nicholas Scott, Bobby Blake, Robert Williams, Ronaldo Moore, Maurice Somers and Leon Lee to lead the title challenge.
Molynes United Coach Calvert Fitzgerald also has eyes on winning the title this year.
“We are coming from Major League up to Super League and naturally, we want to find our footing in the league. We have set a programme to try to reach the Premier League, so the aim, like other coaches, is to try and win the title,” Fitzgerald said.
“It will be a a tough match against Maverley, but we have to approach the game with a positive attitude. We want to start the season with a victory,” he noted.
Molynes have in their ranks Kemar Seivwright, who is a former Tivoli Gardens Premier League player; Ross Burton, formerly of Harbour View FC; brothers Jeremy and Nicholas Nelson, the latter a former national Under-17 striker.
In the opening match, Major League winners Mountain View will play their first match against Central Kingston and Coach Jahmiah Pettigrew will be looking to Troylan Williams, Dwayne Colley, Gregg Brown, Renardo Vassell, Odane Jack, and Dwayne Small for victory.
Central Kingston will be playing their second-consecutive year in the Super League competition in which they finish fifth last season and missed the semi- finals by a point. They will bank on Ronaldo Henry, Arsenio Hamilton, Ewan Murphy, Akeem Robotham, Jermaine Shirley and Romario Palma.
Twelve teams will be participating in the Super League competition and they are placed into two zones based on geographical location. At the completion of the preliminary round, the top-two teams from each zone will advance to the semi-finals. The champions will receive $300,000; runners-up, $250,000; third place, $200,000; and fourth place, $150,000.
