Sir Puddington not going in Lotto Classic
Following Sir Puddington’s win in the 10-furlong (2,000m), I’m satisfied Trophy last Saturday (May 12, 2018), many scribes were of the view that the three-year-old bay colt would next race in the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup, scheduled for May 26 over the same 10-furlongs.
However, trainer Richard Azan said that due to the short space between his charge’s win and the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup, he would not run Sir Puddington in the 10-furlong (2,000m) event.
Ridden by apprentice Oneil Scott, Sir Puddington (Western Classic – Shahar) produced a late surge to beat rivals by a length and three quarters in a time of 2:11.0, to show his liking for long distance races and two turns.
“No, he [ Sir Puddington] won’t be running in the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup come May 26. The race is too close as it is only two weeks away and Sir Puddington has just run 10 furlongs, and to go and run 10 furlongs again would be too taxing.
“ Sir Puddington is a very small horse and so I have been spacing out his races like that ,and we will see what happens after that. He is a nice horse with talent,” Azan stated.
When asked if he is going to have a starter in the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup, Azan said: “I may have a runner in there, I am not sure as yet. but I going to have one. But if I do, it is more than likely going to be My Beirut.”
At the off in the Restricted Allowance event, Jacko Links (Javaniel Patterson) was the first to take the lead and took the field around the clubhouse turn ahead of Bad Boy Trump (Omar Walker) and Sir Puddington.
Running towards the six furlongs (1,200m), Bad Boy Trump picked up the lead ahead of Jacko Links and began to go away. Approaching the half mile (800m) Bad Boy Trump turned on the pressure, kicking on at the top of the lane.
When all seemed lost in deep stretch, Scott, who had kept his mount well-balanced, produced Sir Puddington on the outside of runners and the bay colt found extra to catch Bad Boy Trump inside the last 50 metres to go on to register his second-consecutive win.
Bad Boy Trump did nothing wrong and lost nothing in defeat. He dictated the pace from six furlongs (out), made his move at the right time but was simply no match for the winner when he came calling. Storm held well for third position. The splits for the race were 25.1; 52.3; 1:16.3 and 1:42.3.
“Well, the most important thing is that he won and I am glad that Sir Puddington won as we had been training him for a long time especially for this race and so he won and I am so happy about that,” Azan said.
