MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Members of the Porus-based non-government organisation, the Ackee Tree Group recently honoured students who were successful in the Grade Six Achievement Test.

Twenty-four students from Porus and its environs were given support in preparation for their secondary education in September. Ackee Tree Group member Beverley Tulloch-Danvers said support worth more than $1 million was presented at a function at Trinity Baptist Church.

Lenford George Pinnock, principal of Ramble Primary School located just outside the Porus community, was recognised for the outstanding performance of the institution in 2017-2018. In recent months he has also received the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation for Service to Education.

Retired registered midwife and community stalwart in Porus, Delores Pitter also received a special award at the recent function in Porus. Pitter moved to Manchester in 1970 and worked at Porus Health Centre for many years. She was hailed for her dedication to duty, passing on her expertise to other nurses, and for her active involvement in community life.

Tulloch-Danvers said that the formation of the relatively new Ackee Tree Group, with members in Jamaica and overseas, is to contribute to the development of the areas where many of them had their roots.
