Baltusrol — the ‘Front Runner’
Juvenile Baltusrol , trained by Anthony Nunes, won the first time of asking in the Newport Mills-sponsored Front Runner Dash feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The Blue Pepsi Lodge – Star Flyer bay colt, took the five-furlong (1,000m) round event in a reasonable time of 1:01.3 for his five-and-a-half length win.
Jockey Dick Cardenas put Baltusrol to the lead at the off over stable companion Matriarch (Shane Ellis), but when the field settled at the half-mile (800m) turn, Baltusrol increased the tempo with Top Shelf (Gary Richards) moving into second place over Princess Annie (Omar Walker).
Baltusrol was challenged by Top Shelf approaching the final bend, but then Cardenas simply let out a notch and the far-striding colt responded by powering away.
Princess Annie came on strong in the final furlong (200m) for second with Top Shelf third in the $1.1-million maiden special weight event for native-bred two-year-olds.
It was the start of a three-timer for Cardenas. He was was awarded the sixth race following the disqualification of winner Mrs Kim (Oneil Scott). Cardenas finished second aboard Smarty Tradition for trainer Patrick Lynch as Mrs Kim colours were taken down for causing interference to Young Boy Eddy (Javaniel Patterson) inside the final furlong (200m) of the four-furlong (800m) straight event.
Cardenas then guided the Ian Parsard-trained Super Sparkle to victory in the seventh race over eight-and-a-half furlong (1,700m).
Racing continues on Wednesday with 10 races.
