LAST Friday, children of former Third World percussionist Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett hosted a celebration of his life and legacy at the Vera Moody Hall at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in St Andrew.

The occasion — which was attended by former band members, colleagues, friends and relatives — saw tributes in song, dance, and spoken word for the late musician, healer and caregiver.

In her tribute, Jarrett’s sister Nadine Clarke highlighted the significance of the number 25,346 — the number of days her brother was on earth.

His family reminisced on the immense impact he made in these 25,346 days, remembering his caring soul and hunger to enrich the lives of others. From his health and wellness practice to his contribution to the lives of not only his immediate family members, but to Jamaica’s cultural history.

Tributes included Third World’s founder Cat Coore performing Redemption Song on cello; Half Pint ( One Big Family); percussionist Bongo Herman; Wayne Marshall (Glory to God); and L’Acadco dancers.

The evening brought together artistic greats in a beautiful send-off for the ‘giant of his generation’, as Leader of Opposition Peter Phillips, described him.

The talents of the family members were on display throughout the celebration. They included a spoken word piece by former spouse Kayanne Anderson and son Judah; a dance number by daughter Summer; and drum ensembles by son Judah, nephew Sajato and brothers Kevin, and Esmond.

The occasion also saw a touching video presentation featuring photos and recordings of voice messages that Jarrett left for his children and grandchildren filled with love and encouragement.

Summer aptly said her father is now “drumming win Heaven and healing the angels.”

The curtains came down on the evening, as the gathering sang along to Third World’s Always Around (written by Jarrett for his eldest son, Ard).

Jarrett, 69, was pronounced dead at Andrews Memorial Hospital in St Andrew after her was found unresponsive at home on July 31. His funeral was at Webster Memorial Church in St Andrew on August 9. He is survived by widow, Alisia, five children and two grandchildren.
