Arnett tag Cavalier 2-0 to advance in JFF Women’s KO

ARNETT Gardens came through with a 2-0 win over Cavalier at Charlie Smith High field on Wednesday to move into the second round of the 2018 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/Lascelles Employees Co-Operative Credit Union Women’s knockout competition.

Shaday Shirley opened the scoring for Arnett Gardens in the 20th minute, while Shanise Foster struck home the second in the 85th minute.

In another game, SC Monarchs trounced Frazsiers Whip FC 7-1 at Royal Lakes playfield.

Coach of Arnett Gardens Denton Shedden said he was happy with his team’s victory.

“The team should have won by a much wider margin as they got too many easy chances, especially inside the penalty box, and squandered them that allowed the game to still be a wide open affair,” Shedden said.

Everdean Scarlett, coach of Cavalier, expressed disappointment regarding some of his team’s play.

“They did not play to instructions, and they did not try to gain more possession during the game, as Arnett came to play and Cavalier sat back and allowed their opponents to dominate,” Scarlett said.

Arnett Gardens dominated the early exchanges against Cavalier in the first half, but squandered opportunities due to faulty shooting.

The home team eventually took the lead in the 20th minute through a right-flank attack with a cross inside penalty box, giving Shaday Shirley the chance to kick a one-timer past goalkeeper Danielle Flake.

Another glorious chance came for Arnett, but Olicia Yorke, who had only advancing goalkeeper Flake to beat, placed the ball wide of goal. Cavaliers should have levelled the score, but Taevia Collins lob over goalkeeper Shaquille Laing hit the upright.

At the other end, Arnett’s Rena Gordon was unlucky when her 25-yards shot hit the crossbar.

In the second half, Foster had a chance from inside the penalty box but also hit the upright.

And substitute Shaquille Forbes of Arnett unleashed a thunderous right-footed free kick from a 25-yards shot that eluded goalkeeper Flake and struck the crossbar.

Midway the half, Cavaliers countered on several occasions, but they encountered the sturdy defence of Arnett and lost out.

After squandering easy scoring opportunities, Arnett finally sealed the game in the 85th minute from a build-up that started on the right flank. Foster’s square from the right wing ensued in a melee and she was first to the ball to place it into the far corner.

Barbican Football Club, winners when the KO tournament was last held in 2016, are not participating in the competition this year.
