Jamaica will be looking for back-to-back wins in the 2018 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Boys’ Under-14 Challenge Series when they take on Suriname in the second game of a double-header at UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence on Mona Campus today.

The game is set for 4:00 pm while the first game between Grenada and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is to kick off proceedings at 2:00 pm.

The Jamaicans are in third place on four points, the same as second-place Grenada who have scored more goals than the host team. Barbados lead the five-group team on six points, with Suriname in fourth place on three points and BVI at the foot of the group without a point.

After drawing 1-1 with Grenada in their first match of the series last Saturday, Jamaica earned their first win after whipping BVI 6-0 on Monday courtesy of a hat- trick from Keven Clarke and a brace from David Reid. Stephen Simpson was the other goalscorer.

If the Jamaicans can produce that performance today, then it should be a walk in the park for the host team. However, they cannot take their opponents lightly as Suriname have a capable team.

On Wednesday at the center of excellence, Grenada romped to a 2-0 win over Barbados in the second game of a double-header. In the curtain-raiser it was also an exciting match as Suriname blanked BVI 7-1.

The Grenadians were led by goals from substitute Jaden Thomas in the 36th minute and Tahir Dorest in the 40th.

It wasn’t the best start for either team as they both failed to hold on to possession of the ball in the early exchanges of the contest. Despite wasting some goalscoring chances both teams looked unsettled and went into the break in the 70-minute contest at 0-0.

It was a completely different scenario in the second half as the Grenadians came out firing with two quick goals in the space of four minutes. just one minute into the half, midfielder Thomas headed home from a pass into the left corner of the Barbados net for the lead.

Defender Dorest made it a comfortable 2-0 with a low powerful strike into the left corner of the net that gave goalkeeper Adam Mallalieu no chance in minute 40.

Gerald Alexander, coach of Grenada, said that while he was pleased with team’s effort, his focus is now getting all three points from BVI in their next match.

“My team had a good performance. The first half didn’t start off as excatly what we had planned but at half-time we were able to speak to them [boys] and they came across and executed the best as they can — and we were able to get two goals, I mean, two goals with three points. I am very much pleased with that.

“You will never know what will come next game but we want to keep this momentum going forward into our game against BVI and see if we can take three points from them,” Alexander told the Jamaica Observer.

His opposite number Marlon Harte said he was not disappointed, but promises a better showing against the Jamaicans on Sunday.

“We had to make some changes as it related to the tournament’s rules to make sure that everybody got there minutes in time for the Jamaica game on Sunday and so we did some rotation. I trust all my players, I trust everybody that we as management picked — we just made two mistakes that cost the game, that is it. it is just football sometimes.

“We got a bye now and so we got a couple of days to let everybody to recover as we played three consecutive games. We now have to recover physically and mentally and I am expecting another gritty performance from the boys come Sunday,” Harte said.
