MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Reigning Miss Universe Jamaica Central Jessica Jeffrey earlier this month took time out to provide back-to-school assistance to students.

Through the support of sponsors she was able to donate supplies including reading, colouring, exercise books and pencils.

Jeffrey, who is a student of the Northern Caribbean University, said that her love for children prompted her decision to organise a treat specifically for them, when she had to work on an altruism project for the Miss Universe Jamaica pageant.

Winning the Miss Universe Jamaica Central competition in July earned her an automatic spot in Miss Universe Jamaica.

Jeffrey said growing up she had the opportunity to benefit from back-to-school treats and it was something she enjoyed.

“I wanted them (the children) to have the same opportunity. Hopefully they will grow up to do the same,” Jeffrey told the Jamaica Observer Central.

Her cousin, Sashay Chamberlain, who also benefitted from the treat, said that she was inspired by the contribution that she was making.

In addition to the supplies, it was a fulfilling day for the children, and they were able to have refreshments and participate in activities such as face painting, singing and dancing contests, treasure hunt, and other games.

Jeffrey said that she had catered for about 30 children on the day, while sharing her plans of establishing a full-fledged foundation in the future.

At the Miss Universe Jamaica pageant held at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston at the weekend, she placed sixth from 24 contestants.
