MALDON, St James — Former champions Cornwall College will seek to become the third school to win their first five games in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition today, when they take on Maldon High in a rescheduled Zone A game at Maldon set to start at 3:30 pm.

The game was originally set for last Wednesday but heavy showers just before the start left the already sodden surface riddled with ankle-deep mud puddles in some places, forcing the referees to call off the game.

Three other games are set to be played today as well. Frome Technical will seek to rebound from their big 0-3 loss to defending champions Rusea’s High on Saturday, when they take on Green Island in Zone B; newcomers Belmont Academy and Knockalva will be seeking their first win in Zone D; while St Mary Technical and Guys Hill will meet in a Zone J game at Highgate Community Centre.

Cornwall College have a score to settle at Maldon after they were ambushed 3-1 there last season, losing only their second game in the zone since the 2013 season when they lost by the same margin at home to Green Pond High.

The 12-time champions are one of two schools yet to concede a goal — Old Harbour High being the other — and are coming off a good 3-0 win over St James High on Saturday, and will face a Maldon team held 3-3 by Irwin High last Friday. Maldon are on two points from their four games played.

Shavon McDonald, who scored Cornwall College’s first goal on Saturday and then missed two others in the first half, is expected to lead the team today along with Aiden Jokomba and Salano Birch.

Frome Technical will still be smarting from the drubbing they got on Saturday, and to rub salt in their wounds they will be without Joel Wilson and Jevughnie Coleman — who were both sent off on Saturday.

Coach Aaron Lawrence will still have the services of top scorer Giovauni Mittoo, who was held in check on Saturday after scoring three hat-tricks in his team’s first three games.

Green Island have been on a roll since their opening day loss to Rusea’s High, winning three games and scoring nine unanswered goals. They will hope home advantage works in their favour.

St Mary Technical should continue swapping first place with St Mary High in Zone J when they take on Guys Hill at Highgate Community Centre.

St Mary Technical, winners of the zone the last two seasons, are in second place on 10 points — two behind St Mary High — and are the only team in the zone yet to taste defeat.

In Zone D, Belmont Academy and Knockalva Technical will both be seeking their first win of the season.

Belmont Academy have lost all three games played so far while Knockalva, who played in Zone B last year, have drawn all three games played so far.
