MALDON, St James — Twelve-time champions Cornwall College joined defending champions Rusea’s High and former winners Garvey Maceo High as they raced to five-straight wins at the start of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after beating Maldon High 4-1 in their rescheduled Zone A game played at Maldon in southern St James yesterday.

Aiden Jokomba scored twice, Shavon McDonald scored one as both took their personal tallies to four goals each after Kavon McKenzie scored his first daCosta Cup goal to give Cornwall College the lead, avenging their upset loss at the venue last year. The hosts stayed winless.

In two other games played yesterday, Knockalva Technical scored their first win of the season after three straight draws, beating Belmont Academy 4-0 in Zone D, while St Mary Technical reclaimed the lead in Zone J after beating Guys Hill 2-0.

At Maldon, Cornwall College opened up a six-point lead over Green Pond High and Anchovy after winning their first five games of the season for the third time in five seasons. They are on 15 points.

The only blemish on the record of the 2016 champions was seeing their perfect defensive record end after 414 minutes when Maldon High scored in the 54th minute to make the score 3-1 at the time.

McKenzie, who was handed a starting spot for the first time, repaid his coach’s confidence as he gave Cornwall College the lead in the 21st minute. Jokomba doubled the lead in the 23rd minute and McDonald made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, scoring in back-to-back games.

Jadon Appleton pulled one back for Maldon High in the 54th minute but Jokomba completed his second double of the season when he got another goal in the 87th minute.

At Sandals South Coast, Knockalva Technical snapped a seven-game winless run that started last season as Devonee Powell and Kingsley Alcock got two goals each against the newcomers, doubling their goals total this season.

The win took Knockalva Technical to third place on six points, two behind joint leaders Petersfield High and Little London and two more than Manning’s School with Belmont Academy still awaiting their first point of the season.

At Highgate Community Centre, Alva Duncan and Carlton Rose scored in the second half for St Mary Technical as they reclaimed the lead in Zone J from St Mary High.

Duncan was scoring his second goal of the season and Rose, his first, as St Mary Technical improved to 13 points, one more than St Mary High.
