Grange observes anniversary of coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange has today joined the Rastafari community in celebrating the 88th anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen.

“Their coronation on 2 November 1930 ushered in a new wave of pride in the Black world,” Grange said in a release from her ministry.

The minister said that His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I is an important figure to members of the Rastafari faith, the 20th century religion born in Jamaica that has spread across the world.

“Emperor Selassie entered the minds of the international public in a way that no other African monarch had since Cleopatra. However, no country and no people honour the Ethiopian Emperor more than Jamaica and Jamaicans, and those who hold him in highest regard are the Rastafari.

“On this important anniversary of the Coronation, I join my Rastafari brothers and sisters in celebration,” Grange said.
