THIS year’s Glen Mills Caribbean Sprint Championship is definitely a contest involving older horses and a set of new ones hoping to stamp their class with their speed and youthfulness.

The older set of horses are led by Chace The Great, Mr Universe, Campesino and Money Magnet, while the newbies are Patriarch and Peking Cruz.

Patriarch, who won the first two legs of the Supreme Ventures Two-Year-Old Series and the Juvenile Sprint at this time last year, returned to action after a 10-month absence due to injury to win the Overnight Allowance Ahwhofah Trophy Sprint in late October.

At no time during the race over six furlongs (1,200m) did Patriarch look bothered by being in a competitive situation and marched to a four-length victory.

The final time of 1:11.4 for the event was just two-fifths of a second outside of his stable companion Siempre Bueno Stakes record of 1:11.2.

With that run, Patriarch announced his participation in the Caribbean Sprint and has since set tongues wagging.

Trainer Anthony Nunes said that he was pleased with the preparation drills of Patriarch coming into the race.

“ Patriarch is the young boy of the party and this will be making a big task of him not having raced in 10 months. To win an Overnight Allowance event, yes, is great and he is in great shape as well.

“But I am asking him a lot to run against the best sprinters in the land. He worked the other morning and worked nicely, and I am looking forward to a good run from him in the Caribbean Sprint come Superstakes Day,” Nunes said.
