After surgery, Packman delivers
FOLLOWING Pakman’s expected win in a high- claiming ($600,000-$500,000) event on Wednesday, trainer Fitzroy Glispie says his four-year-old bay colt will be able to deliver more.
Pakman, after a disappointing fifth-place finish behind Mr Pantheon over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course three weeks ago, showed up this time a completely different animal and made no mistake when putting away rivals by 4 1/2 lengths in a six-furlong (1,200m) event.
In the capable hands of apprentice Reyan Lewis, Pakman showed good speed at the off and tracked Mr Ambassador (Shamaree Muir) from close range in second position, with Balazo (Dick Cardenas) settled in third.
Coming into the lane Pakman took over and, with a change of hold from the apprentice, the Taqarub offspring powered away for a comfortable win- his third for the season and fourth overall.
Mr Ambassador held on for second place with Diligent (Robert Halledeen) finishing third. The final time was 1:13.2.
After the race, Glispie revealed that his charge was coming off a successful surgery and that he was relieved with the performance.
“It was a good run as he is coming back to himself now. Pakman has had some problems on which we had to operate.
“He went well the other morning in his exercise gallops and so we were pretty much sure that he would have won here today (Wednesday).
“ Pakman is a nice racehorse with talent. He is going on to Overnight Allowance level now and I think that he will do a good job up there, he is a fighter,” Glispie said of his charge.
