Alvaranga stars for Immaculate, but Campion College claim overall honours at Swim Champs
Zaneta Alvaranga once again proved a cut above the rest as Immaculate Conception High maintained their stranglehold on the Girls’ title, but it was Campion College that came away as the top team overall at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) High Schools and Tertiary Institution Swim Championships yesterday.
The Constant Spring-based Immaculate team tallied 519 points to win the Girls’ division ahead of Campion College girls (373 points) and St Andrew High for Girls (255 points), while Wolmer’s Girls’ (68 points) and Holy Childhood High (40 points) completed the top five.
Campion College also retained top honours on the boys’ side with a tally of 422.5 points, followed by Wolmer’s Boys’ (338 points) and Kingston College (199 points). Jamaica College (183 points) and St George’s College (65 points) were next.
However, when combined, it was Campion College that came out tops with a total of 815.5 points, ahead of Immaculate’s 519, with Wolmer’s Boys, St Andrew High and Kingston College completing that frame.
In tertiary action, Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) scored 221 points, as they were too much for the University of the West Indies (UWI), who could only muster 142 points.
At total of 17 records were broken on the day with Alvaranga leading the way with five records and Campion College’s Nathaniel Thomas accounting for three under cloudy skies and periodic drizzle at the National Aquatic Centre.
While ISSA’s schoolboy football competitions were igniting the National Stadium, Jamaica’s young swiiming sensations sparked some fireworks of their own a stone’s throw away.
Alvaranga, in her first year in the 13-14 age group, also led the Immaculate scoring with a maximum 36 points from four individual events and assisted her 200m medley relay team to victory in record-breaking fashion.
Alvaranga’s first record came in the girls’ 13-14 50-metre freestyle where she clocked a fast 27.64 to lower the previous mark of 27.98 set by Emily MacDonald in 2016. Safiya Officer (28.44s), also of Immaculate, was second with Campion College’s Paige Lewis (29.35s) in third.
Thomas took the boys’ 13-14 event in 25.48, just lowering the previous mark of 25.48 set by Kyle Sinclair last year. The Wolmer’s Boys’ pair of Zachary Johnson (27.48s) and Ajani Thompson (27.54) took the runners-up spots.
Alvaranga logged her second record in the 50m breaststroke, stopping the clock at 36.46 to better 37.38 set by Priscilla McClure eight years ago in 2010. Sabrina Lyn (37.02s) of Campion College was second and Brooke Hopkins (39.07s) of Immaculate third.
Alvaranga also etched her name in the record books in the 100m freestyle with her 1:02.47, lowering the 1:02.70 set in 2010 by Breanna Roman and in the 50m butterfly she clocked 29.61 to erase 31.04 set by Macdonald in 2016.
Thomas’s other two records came in the 13-14 Boys’ 50m backstroke where he clocked a fast 28.85 to better 29.70 and returned shortly after in the 100m freestyle to clock 55.71, lowering 55.89. Both records broken were set by Kyle Sinclair last year.
Other record breakers on the day were Brianna Anderson of Immaculate who clocked 31.26 in the girls’ 15-16 50m backstroke to lower 32.37 set in 2010 by Alexia Royal-Eatmon.
Rin Gyles of Cornwall College won the boys’ 15-16 50m backstroke in 29.67, erasing 29.72 set by Jesse Marsh in 2016.
Kokolo Foster was also in top form in the girls’ 12 & under 50m breaststroke, winning in a time of 36.44, lowering Alvaranga’s 39.23 set last year, while Britney Williams of Wolmer’s Girls’ won the girls’ 17 & over 100m freestyle.
Williams established a new mark of 1:03.75 to erase 1:05.50 set by Leanne McMaster in 2014.
And Paris Clare of St Andrews High for Girls also placed herself among the record breakers with a solid performance in the girls’ 15-16 Girls’ 50m butterfly, stopping the clock in 30.82 to wipe out 30.92 also set by McMaster in 2013.
