Raging Fyah starts new Journey
Odean “Journey” Ricketts

Raging Fyah starts new Journey

Grammy -nominated band Raging Fyah has a new lead vocalist in Odean “Journey” Ricketts. He replaces Kumar Bent who left in July.

Ricketts came to the band’s attention through his participation in last year’s Digicel Rising Stars competition, in which he placed second to Tasha-Gay Solomon.

“I have been a fan of Raging Fyah ever since they came on the scene. As an artiste and musician that loves reggae and roots music, Raging Fyah was what I gravitated to because it spoke to who I am. I always loved the band and the vibe, so to be the new lead singer is hard to put in words. It is an honour, it’s a dream come true. Becoming a member of the band that I have always looked up to is very humbling, it’s also a big responsibility and I don’t take it lightly,” said Ricketts.

Raging Fyah bass guitarist Delroy “Pele” Hamilton stated: “We are very upbeat and excited to be going into this next chapter with Journey as his energy, sound, and feel one ideal for the band. Him jus’ sound like a real rebel — with a raw fire, yet a warm voice. Plus, his versatility will give our fans soul-moving performances and have them wanting more. His authentic sound mixed with his youthful exuberance and charisma will appeal to people of all ages.”

Last year, Bent signalled his intentions to part company with the band via a post on social media. He said he made the decision after lengthy deliberation and meditation.

“It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to announce my decision to leave the band Raging Fyah. I believe all concerned will benefit from a parting of ways at this point and I see this as the inevitable conclusion. We all have our own paths to follow in this world, and mine has carried me to where I am today as an artiste/musician,” the singer noted.

In a subsequent interview with the Jamaica Observer, Bent cited financial issues as one of the reasons for him leaving Raging Fyah, a five-piece band which emerged from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in 2006.

Bent, who is also a graduate of that college, joined the band in 2010. Raging Fyah released its first album in 2011, and in 2016 signed to VP Records; their third album, Everlasting, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album.

The other members of Raging Fyah are Demar Gayle, and Anthony Watson. Original guitarist Courtland “Gizmo” White quit the band before Bent and was replaced by Nicolas “Grossy” Groskopf.

The band’s first performance for 2019 will be at Bright Side Festival from January 6-10 at Jewel Paradise Cove Resort and Spa in Runaway Bay, St Ann.

They are also scheduled to in New Zealand at the One Love Festival on January 27.
