Shantae Foreman continues to soar to record-breaking heights and distances despite stepping up in class.

The Excelsior High student ruled the roost at the Digicel Corporate Area Development Meet last year in Class Three, dominating her opponents to win gold in the high jump and long jump.

Participating in her first year in Class Two this year, she showed no nerves on Friday to win gold in record fashion in both disciplines despite fierce competition in the long jump.

Beginning with the high jump in the morning session, Foreman entered the competition at 1.60m and broke the record of 1.70m that was jointly held by Gabrielle Foster of Alpha who set the record in 2015 and her teammate Kaliah Jones who equalled it last year, when she soared to 1.75m.

Her teammate Danielle Hinds was second on countback with a best of 1.70m, while Aaliyah Lindsay of Alpha was third with the same height.

Foreman and Lindsay would resume their rivalry in the afternoon in the long lump and it provided a lot of excitement for the crowd.

Lindsay set the tone early when she broke her own record of 5.94m, cutting the sand at 6m even on her second jump.

After a best jump of 5.81m on her first jump and two foul jumps on her third and fourth jumps, the pressure was building on the Excelsior star.

She answered the call on her fifth jump, however, as she registered a record-breaking distance of 6.29m to claim her second gold of the day.

Foreman was overjoyed at the end of the gruelling challenge with her biggest rival.

“The feeling is unexplainable knowing that I won double gold and with a double record. It’s my first year in Class Two so that makes it even more special to me,” she said.

Winning isn’t as easy as it looks for the gangly teenager and she explained what it takes for her to remain at the top.

“I train hard, I am always focused and you have to be very determined, you have to put your mind to what you want to achieve,” Foreman stated.

The step up in class has not been difficult in the high jump, but the long jump is a bit different, she said.

“It is not much more difficult in the high jump, but in the long jump I have one main challenger,” she said without calling names.

The ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls Athletics Championships is on the horizon and Foreman already knows exactly what her goals are at the five-day event.

“(I) am looking forward to Champs, I am looking to take the girls’ high jump record, which is 1.83m and reset it at 1.85m and to finish at least top two in the girls long jump,” she noted.

Excelsior High will be depending on Foreman to score big points at Champs as they continue their rise as a powerhouse in high school track and field in Jamaica.
