MONTEGO BAY, St James — Heavily armed robbers on Sunday morning made off with $1.2 million after killing a driver and a security guard in a daring attack in Montego Bay, St James, which resembled a scene from an action film .

“They got away with $1.2 million,” a usually impeccable Jamaica Observer police source close to the investigation revealed.

A second security guard was shot and injured during the drama-filled heist by four men armed with M-16 rifles.

The deceased, both of St James addresses, have been identified as 61-year-old Hawkeye security officer, Canute Earle, of Norwood Gardens, and 47-year-old driver, Floyd Wilson, of Rosemount Gardens.

Up to late yesterday afternoon, investigators were on the ground working assiduously to find trails leading to the robbers.

Reports are that about 8:00 am Sunday, a Chinese businessman was transporting two bags with cash and documents in his white Toyota Hiace minibus, which was being driven by Wilson. Earle and another armed security personnel were travelling in a marked Hawkeye security company motor vehicle that was escorting the minibus.

Upon reaching a section of Jarrett Street in Montego Bay, four men — attired in denim and bulletproof vests and armed with M-16 rifles — alighted from a white Toyota motor car which was used to block the path of the minibus and the Hawkeye vehicle.

The men opened fire at the occupants of the Hiace motor vehicle and the security detail. The Chinese businessman managed to run from the minibus and escape injuries, leaving behind the bags with cash inside the motor vehicle.

After the shooting subsided, Earle and his colleague were taken to hospital where he died and his colleague was admitted. Wilson died on the spot.
