Court to rule on PNP’s challenge to NIDS this Friday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Constitutional Court will be delivering its ruling in the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) challenge to sections of the National Identification and Registration Act, 2017 this Friday.
A statement from the Court Management Services (CMS) today noted that there will be a live audio streaming of the ruling of the full court in the matter between the PNP’s General Secretary Julian Robinson and Attorney General of Jamaica Marlene Malahoo Forte.
The CMS said the judiciary is cognizant of the high level of interest in the matter by Jamaicans domiciled locally and in the Diaspora.
In light of the immense public interest in the case and limitations in the seating capacity in the courtroom, the CMS said audio of the proceedings will be streamed live from the following websites: www.supremecourt.gov.jm, www.cms.gov.jm andwww.parishcourt.gov.jm.
The CMS said the claimant, Robinson, requested several declarations from the court on the basis that certain provisions of the National Identification and Registration Act abrogates, abridges and infringes particular rights outlined in the Constitution of Jamaica.
The Attorney General of Jamaica is named as the defendant in the case.
The full court panel, comprising Justice Bryan Sykes, Chief Justice; Justice David Batts, and Justice Lisa Palmer Hamilton heard submissions from the parties from October 22-24 last year.
The Government passed the much-debated NIDS Bill on November 21, 2017.
