Jamaica were well set to land 35th-straight honours at the Carifta Ganes on last night’s second and penultimate day of the 48th staging of the regional meet at Truman Bodden Sports Complex in Grand Cayman.

With a number of finals still to be contested at press time last night, including the 200m races, Jamaica had accumulated 47 medals (16 gold, 20 silver and 11 bronze) to lead the Bahamas’s 13 (eight gold, one silver and four bronze), Guyana on seven medals (three gold, two silver and two bronze), Barbados with five (two gold, two silver and one bronze) and Bermuda’s three (two gold and a bronze).

Fifteen of the 28 countries taking part had won at least one bronze medal up to last night.

The championships will end today with finals in 16 individual events plus eight relays — four each in the 4x100m and 4x400m.

The sprint hurdles are expected to grab a large share of the highlight with a number of very talented Jamaicans chasing the medals.

World age group record holder Ackera Nugent and Crystal Morrison will lead the Jamaican charge for the Under-20 girls, while Kay-Lagay Clarke and Crystal Shaw will line up in the Under-17 girls’ 100m obstacle race.

Rasheed Broadbell, who won at the trials, two weeks ago in 13.14 seconds, and the exciting Vashaun Vascianna, who ran 13.22 second, will run in the Under-20 boys’ hurdles, while Deshaun Lamb and Niel-Matthew Sutherland will go in the Under-17 boys’ event.

Both boys’ triple jumps will be held today, as well as the girls’ Under-17 ‘hop, step and jump’, boys’ Under-20 shot put, girls’ Under-17 discus throw, as well as girls’ Under-20 shot put and boys’ Under-17 discus throw.

Yesterday, Jamaica succeeded in three of the four 400m hurdles races taking gold and silver medals in both women’s races and the Under-17 boys.

Shaquena Foote won her second gold medal of the Games in the Under-20 400m hurdles to add to the 400m gold she won on Saturday.

Foote ran 58.05 seconds to beat teammate Johnelle Smith in 58.77 seconds with Tamia Badal of Trinidad in third in one minute 01.34 seconds.

Quaycian Davis struck gold in the girls’ Under-17 in 1:00.78 minutes, beating Sashel Reid (1:01.59), with Reshae Dean of the Bahamas taking the bronze in 1:03.52 minutes.

Jayden Brown (53.03 seconds) and Sharvis Simmonds (54.11 seconds) made it a third gold and silver finish for Jamaica in the Under-17 boys’ final with Barbadian Aren Spencer finishing third in 54.26 seconds.

Shamar Brown took bronze in the Under-20 boys’ 400m hurdles, running 52.51 seconds, as Barbados’s Rasheeme Griffith won with 51.47 seconds with The Bahamas’s Matthew Thompson taking third in 52.23 seconds.

Jamaica took two quinellas in the 800m as Kimar Farquharson and Tyrice Taylor caught and passed St Vincent and the Grenadine’s courageous front-running 17-year-old Handel Roban, who finished third.

Farquharson clocked 1:49.65 minutes to beat Taylor for the second time in four finals this year, with the silver medallist running 1:49.73 minutes and Roban just missing a national junior record with 1:52.22 seconds.

Jodyann Mitchell, who was second in the 1500m on Saturday, won the gold in the Under-17 girls’ 800m in 2:11.92 minutes, just edging teammate Kishay Rowe (2:11.97) on the line after both caught Guyana’s Adriel Austin with about 90 metres to go.

Adrian Nethersole took third place in the Under-17 boys’ 800m in 1:58.78 minutes, beaten by Bermuda’s Nirobi Smith-Mills, who ran 1:57.95 and Barbados’s Savion Hoyte third with 1:58.78.

Abigail Schaafe was also third in the girls’ Under-20 800m in 2:12.73 minutes. Jasmine Knowles of the Bahamas won with 2:09.49 and Guyana’s Joanna Archer was second in 2:10.17 minutes.

After placing second in the Under-20 girls’ long jump late Saturday night, Lotavia Brown created an upset by winning the triple jump with a best mark of 13.09m (0.1m/s), beating Guyana’s long jump gold medallist Chantoba Bright with 12.63m (-0.9m/s) as Monifah Djoe of Suriname took third with 12.41m (-0.5m/s).

Paula-Ann Chambers took the bronze medal in the girls’ Under-17 long jump in the morning session with 5.52m (-0.4m/s) as The Bahamas’s Anthaya Charlton won with a wind-aided 5.81m (2.3m/s) with Guadeloupe’s Anne-Sophie Tassius taking the silver 5.74m (-2.8m/s).
