Deshaun Lamb broke the championship record in the boys’ Under-17 110m hurdles running 13.54 seconds (0.6m/s) to put an exclamation mark on Jamaica’s dominance at the 48th Carifta Games that came to an end at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in Grand Cayman yesterday.

Jamaican athletes stamped their class on the final day of the three-day championships sweeping the sprint hurdles, the sprint relays and both of the boys’ triple jumps that were contested.

Ackera Nugent continued to amaze; lowering her own world age group record to win the Under-20 girls’ 100m hurdles in 13.24 seconds.

At press time yesterday, Jamaica were well on their way to winning a 35th-straight Carifta Games title, and 43rd overall, and had 76 medals, inclusive of 30 gold, 31 silver and 15 bronze.

The Bahamas had 23 medals in second place, made up of nine gold, five silver and nine bronze, followed by Trinidad and Tobago with 18 medals (four gold, six silver, eight bronze); Guyana with 10 (four gold, three silver, three bronze); Barbados also with 10 (three gold, three silver and four bronze); and Bermuda with six medals (three gold, one silver, and two bronze).

Lamb broke the 13.60 seconds record set last year by teammate Vashaun Vascianna, as Niel-Matthew Sutherland took the silver with 13.61 seconds, and Matthew Sophie of Curacao took the bronze in 13.64 seconds.

Despite hitting the fourth hurdle, Rasheed Broadbell won the Under-20 boys’ title, running 13.26 seconds (-0.3m/s) with Vascianna second (13.32 seconds) and Guadeloupe’s Jeanice Laviolette third in 13.39 seconds.

Nugent was in a class by herself as she lowered her World Youth best mark in the Under-20 girls’ 100m hurdles to 13.24 seconds (0.8m/s), hurdling smoothly after just brushing the first barrier.

She had run 13.26 seconds at a lower height at the Digicel Grand Prix finals last month.

Sarah Belle of Barbados took the silver with 13.55 seconds with Gabrielle Gibson of the Bahamas taking the bronze with 13.80 seconds.

Jamaica’s other competitor, Crystal Morrison, hit the third hurdle hard then crashed into the fourth before coming to a dead stop, but managed to complete the race.

Kay-Lagay Clarke won the girls’ Under-17 100m hurdles gold medal, catching her fast-starting teammate Crystal Shaw after three barriers and raced away to win in 13.68 seconds (1.6m/s).

Shaw took the silver in 13.72 seconds as the Bahamas’s Anthaya Charlton took the bronze with 13.83 seconds after earlier winning two gold medals.

It was a clean sweep for the Jamaicans in the relays as sprint double champion Briana Williams led off the Under 20 women’s team as she took her third gold medal of the weekend.

The team of Williams, Joanne Reid, Nugent and Kemba Nelson clocked 44.25 seconds to cross the finish line first ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (45.11 seconds) and Barbados (45.52 seconds) in the girls 4x100m.

Ryiem Robertson did well on the anchor leg of the Under-20 boys’ race to catch Terrance Jones, the Bahamian anchor leg runner, and beat him on the line.

The team of Oblique Seville, Vascianna, 200m champion Xavier Nairne and Robertson was timed in 39.46 seconds, just marginally ahead of the Bahamas (39.49 seconds), and Barbados took the bronze in 40.18 seconds.

The Under-17 girls’ team of Crystal Shaw, Brianna Lyston, Glacian Loutin and Kay-Lagay Clarke won in 45.63 seconds ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (45.73 seconds) and Bermuda (47.47).

The Under-17 boys’ team of Richard Nelson, Adrian Kerr, Christopher Scott, and Bouwahjgie Nkrumie clocked 41.59 seconds to win the gold with Bahamas in second with 42.18 seconds and Trinidad and Tobago with 42.45 seconds.

Jamaican jumpers took both boys’ triple jump titles, including gold and silver in the Under-17 section, Rajaun Ricketts won with a best mark of 14.26m (-1.0m/s) beating Jaheim Cox 14.01m (-2.2m/s) with Barbados’s Aren Spencer taking the bronze with 13.81m (-0.8m/s).

Cox was winning his second medal after taking the bronze in the long jump on Saturday.

Apalos Edwards took the bronze in the Under-20 boys’ final with 15.05m (-0.0m/s); Barbadian Jonathon Miller won with 15.30m (-1.9m/s) with Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelsey Daniel taking silver with 15.14 (-2.4m/s).

It was Daniel’s second medal of the championships after taking bronze in the long jump on Sunday evening.

Kelly-Ann Beckford was second in the girls’ Open 3000m, running 10 minutes 28.13 seconds behind Bermuda’s Isabell Dutrannoit who led from the start to win in 10:21.63 seconds and Claudrice McKoy of Guyana taking third in 10:37.43 seconds.

Cobe Graham won the gold medal in the Under-20 shot put with 18.62m, beating Grenada’s Johann Jeremiah (18.53m) with discus throw gold medallist Kai Chang taking the bronze with 17.57m.

Cedricka Williams won the Under-17 girls’ discus throw with 47.94m in a first and second for Jamaica with Damali Williams placing second with 40.87m and Treneese Hamilton of Dominica taking bronze with 39.26m.
