Dear Editor,

So, let me get this straight. We’re not going to concentrate our efforts on the biggest contributory factor at the root of the carnage on our roads, which is bad driving. Neither will the focus be on any of the myriad other things, such as poor road conditions or speeding, to name two. What we will be doing, instead, is implementing a plan copied from some place overseas with different dynamics.

Motorists will now be mandated to drive with their headlights on all day and this will solve our traffic accident woes. Brilliant, we’ll probably be asked to wear snow tyres on our vehicles next.

I am at a total loss as to what informs the thought processes of the people we task, entrust moreover, with the responsibility of devising solutions to challenges we face as a country. The much-celebrated passport for cows as a means of combating praedial larceny is one instance that comes readily to mind. I am not sure if it was the express or seven-day service my neighbour had utilised in relation to acquiring one for his cow, but it is yet to arrive.

Perhaps inviting suggestions from the general public in the form of a competition via the print media would yield workable results.
