MANCHESTER, England — It was a case of opportunity lost for West Indies as their weaknesses were exposed by Bangladesh last time out, but the team is confident of getting positive results for the remainder of the group stage.

West Indies, with only three points after losing three of their five outings so far, have four games left to breathe life into a semi-final quest that has gone off the rails.

Their next chance to right the ship comes against unbeaten New Zealand — who already have nine points from five games — in a day/night encounter at Old Trafford tomorrow.

The West Indies are hoping, too, that other results favour them.

“It’s looking tough at this present moment, but it’s not impossible,” said West Indies captain Jason Holder.

“We have to play every game here now as a final. We’ve got to win every game left, to give ourselves a really good chance. We’ve just got to control what we can, and that’s playing each game as a final,” he continued.

With India, one of the favourites to lift the title, coming up next Thursday, Holder said: “They’re a good team. But if we want to get through into the semi-finals, we’ve got to play good cricket.

“We’ve got to beat the best games. India obviously is going to be a tough game. We’ve got New Zealand as well. We’ve got to back ourselves and be a lot more clinical with the ball, and still go a lot further with the bat.”

West Indies Assistant Coach Roddy Estwick said the team will have to put the Bangladesh loss on Monday in Taunton behind them while also learning from mistakes they made.

“I think Bangladesh were a lot better than us [on the day],” he said.

“What we’ve got to do now is learn from the mistakes. We’re gonna regroup…and we’re gonna continue to prepare. We must not point fingers or proportion blame to individuals. Everybody has to take the responsibility, respect one another, and come up with the solutions,” Estwick urged.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Shai Hope, who made 96 against Bangladesh, stressed the need for wins while adding they need to be virtually perfect if they are to sneak into the semi-finals.

“It’s basically wins; wins or nothing. We must recover very quickly. [We have to] do everything we can to win every game. We know what position we are in and everything must go [well],” Hope said.
