BIG Pop is asking members of the public to use social media platforms in a responsible manner and not to disseminate lies and scams, which could hurt other people.

“Last week, when the JUTC [Jamaica Urban Transit Company] bus driver and taxi operator were killed, it was social media that spread the word quicker than local news and helped to create a feeling of dread and fear that was out there, and mek the whole country stop,” Big Pop, 25, told Jamaica Observer.

He praised the police for quickly resolving the situation.

Last Tuesday JUTC drivers withdrew their service in response to the killing of Mikkel Donaldson, one of the company’s mechanics, the previous day. He was shot and killed in New Kingston, said to be in retaliation for the fatal stabbing of a taxi operator, allegedly by a JUTC driver.

Facebook postings, as well as WhatsApp voice notes, suggested the murder of the mechanic was in retaliation for the killing of the taxi driver, and that more retaliatory killings should expected. The police have, however, indicated that they have no evidence that the killing of the mechanic or of threats of more attacks on bus drivers were connected.

Big Pop is currently promoting Simple Child, released on September 24 on the Black Love Production label and being distributed by 21st Hapilos.

“The majority of songs I sing are based on my own personal experiences, and this song is about betrayal and hurt from people who you once helped in life. But despite the hurt, if you have the heart to help, just help; smile, keep it cool. Mi born simple so mi keep it simple, ’cause there is a blessing coming from God,” said the deejay.

Big Pop (given name Ricardo Rankine) was a favourite in the 2012 edition of the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition. He secured a second-place spot.

His other songs include Summa Swag, Time, We Are One and My Friends. He is booked to perform on the ‘Stop the Crime and Violence’ college tour show in Trelawny on October 15.
