Safety workshop on October 30
Grennell’s Driver Safety Training and Services will be hosting its ‘On the Road, On the Job International Safety Workshop’ at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston on October 30.
The theme of this, the 9th annual symposium, is ‘Live Safe, Drive Safe, Work Safe’.
Started in 2011, the workshop is the brainchild of Alphonso Grennell, managing director of Grennell’s Driving School. He said it grew out of a noticeable lack of safety training, both for motoring and for general safety.
“We initially conceived this workshop as we noticed the absence of general training in the occupational health and safety fields, so we have responded by broadening the focus,” he said.
Presentations will be made by leading experts in occupational safety and health from Jamaica and overseas. In addition to moderators Kennisha Drummond-Martin, safety environment & Premix officer; and Dr Simone French, consultant emergency physician and lecturer. Participants can expect to hear from Dr Wes Scott, Chicago-based CEO of Global EHSS Leadership Solutions; Dwight Campbell, quality, health, safety and environment manager, IGL; Madeline Malone-Thompson, compliance safety and health officer with the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) in Atlanta; Trecia Mullings-Allen, group safety, environment and standards manager, JBGL; and New York City-based Dr Robert Lewis, president of Always Safe Inc.
Grennell’s is partnering with the Global EHSS Leadership Solutions, with endorsements by the National Road Safety Council and the Jamaica Occupational Health and Safety Professionals Association.
Among the topics previously covered by the workshop are ‘Risk Mitigation and Management’, ‘Safety in the Real World’, ‘Turning Theory into Practice’, and ‘Building a Business Case for Safety’.
Ergonomics, Workplace Fatigue and Fleet Management will also take prominence at the workshop, with businesses and transport managers set to learn how issues of safety help to reduce costs and increase profits. Safety professionals will also receive the latest information on shifting their safety initiatives from policy to practice within and outside the workplace.
