Jackie Moore, the American soul singer who helped define that genre in the 1970s, has died at age 73. She was popular in Jamaica during that decade with songs like Precious Precious and Sweet Charlie Babe .

The website, Soul Tracks, reported Moore’s passing as November 8 but did not give a cause of death or where she died.

Jackie Moore was among a batch of soul singers from the American south, whose careers fluctuated between national and regional hit songs. Others included Dorothy Moore (no relation), Margie Joseph and Shirley Brown, all of whom are still popular with the Jamaican oldies crowd.

Moore was born in Jacksonville, Florida. She started her career in the late 1960s and got her breakthrough in 1970 as a solo artiste with Precious Precious.

Sweet Charlie Babe, a 1973 dance number some musicologists consider a precursor to disco, was another big hit for her.

The 1972 ballad, It Ain’t Who You Know, and 1978’s Personally, were also popular on Jamaican radio.

Moore’s last major song was the disco smash, This Time Baby, released in 1979.
