Nunes’ fab four take aim at trainers’ trophy feature

Title-chasing trainer Anthony Nunes holds all the aces in the running of the $930,000 United Racehorse Trainers’ Association Trophy feature with four of the top runners to contest the Restricted Stakes event at Caymanas Park today.

Nunes saddles Big Bang, Earn Your Stripes, Tricky One and Latapy in the 12-horse field going over the spectators’ paradise trip of nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m).

While all four runners are expected to be in the money, the race, however, should come down to a straight fight between Earn Your Stripes and Tricky One with Big Bang and Latapy settling for the minor shares in what should be an interesting race from start to finish.

Earn Your Stripes has finished in second in his last two starts and should now be poised to go one better here. In his last run over seven furlongs (1,400m) in the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Stakes on November 8, Earn Your Stripes was second by a length and a half to stable companion Legality in a quick 1:25.0. That race was at the Overnight Allowance level and now stepping down to compete for this trophy event, Earn Your Stripes is going to make a brave bid for top honours here. Two-time champion jockey Shane Ellis replaces apprentice Christopher Mamdeen in the saddle.

Tricky One was also impressive in his run on November 8, where he finished a remote third behind Princess Ava and Cryptocurrency in Division Two of the Supreme Ventures Diamond Sprint over six-and-a-half furlongs (1,300m) in a stakes-equalling record time of 1:18.3. Tricky One, who gets the services of the three-time champion jockey, the bustling Dane Nelson, is going to enjoy this extended trip and could get up in the nick of time for the win here.

Big Bang is slowly but surely coming into his own at the right time. Going six-and-a-half furlongs on last in Division Two of the Supreme Ventures Diamond Sprint on November, Big Bang came from nowhere to finish third behind stable companion Prince Charles in a quick 1:18.4. He now gets a journey where he can relax and should again be on the premises.

Latapy was a ¾-length winner on last over a mile (1,600m) on November 8 in a respectable time of 1:39.3. Now stepping up in grade and journey, Latapy should not find the task too taxing and is expected to give his best once more.

The race is not limited to these four as Crimson, Sebastian and She’s Irie are capable enough to take a part in the outcome of the event.

The race is positioned as the eighth event on the 10-race programme with a post time of 4:00 pm. First race is at noon.

Also on tap and should draw some attention is a Restricted Overnight Allowance run for the Robert “Claiming King” Darby (Sr) Trophy going over seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m) for a purse of $1 million. Nunes’ Corazon, to be ridden by Nelson, should come out on top ahead of My Elle Belle, Wartime, Pleasant Secret and Winter Is Coming.

Ones to watch:

Race 1) Miss Formality/Azaria/Killer Bee

Race 2) Fearless Champion/Uncle Polly/Eroy

Race 3) Flying Machine/Ballon d’Or/Blood Song

Race 4) Velvet Moon/Kiah/Cry Cry Baby

Race 5) Unbreakable/Hologram Shadow/Cruising Motion

Race 6) Phineas/Queen Oftheharbour/Rising Bop

Race 7) Disturbin di Peace/Instagram/Lion of Judah

Race 8) Earn Your Stripes/Tricky One/Big Bang

Race 9) Corazon/My Elle Belle/Wartime

Race 10) Dreamingofanna/Lazer Light/Cali Dreamer
