Jamaica’s William “Wings” Myers won the 2019 Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup (RCC) in Guyana on the weekend of November 16. The 22-year-old racer fought a hard battle and emerged ahead of last year’s Bajan winner, Stuart Maloney, by a seven-point margin.

“Although I’ve been racing for a while here in Jamaica, I feel that I am at a place to take on greater challenges. That’s when my team and I decided to take on a regional championship like RCC, which is great for me because it’s a spec series,” Myers shared, reflecting on why it was important to challenge himself in this way.

“The unique thing about a spec series is that everyone has the same car and the same equipment, so the competition comes right down to skill,” he concluded.

Myers, who studies business at Lynn University in Florida, is the second racer to claim the Caribbean Cup in what is its second year in existence. Leading up to the big win he had already claimed the Jamaica Race Drivers’ Club (JRDC) Modified Production class 2 twice and topped the times in the first of two Free Practice sessions at the opening RCC round at Bushy Park, Barbados in April.

His championship victory was gained by consistent performances at the final round. He finished third twice, then second in the day’s final race, ending the day second on points to Mark Maloney despite his team facing issues with their car.

“Somehow the Maloney’s team was able to find the grip and all odds were against me going up against the three of them. They worked as a team and I only had myself. But I was never afraid of losing.” Myers insisted, “I had to remind myself to remain consistent and focus on my goal of taking the cup during the race. Though I didn’t win races outright, I had a couple of top 3s and top 5s, at the end of the day I beat Stuart Maloney (last year’s winner) by seven points. It was close, but a win is a win,” said Myers.

Myers continued to share that his love and passion for the sport was sparked by his father, Mark Myers, managing director of Restaurant of Jamaica, who bought him his first go-kart and shared his passion for Formula One (F1). Since then, his spirit and drive have been sustained by his supportive team, which includes his father, and the inspiration he pulls from racers like Charles Leclerc, who he claims is his favourite F1 driver.

In speaking of his plans for the future, Myers shared that his dream is to race for the big leagues. He has goals for himself to achieve within the next year and believes that his drive and persistence will get him where he dreams of being.
