Bad idea? Miss Universe Jamaica under fire for wearing ‘Annie Palmer’ costume
Miss Universe Jamaica 2019 Iana Tickle Garcia has
come under heavy fire for wearing an Annie Palmer-inspired costume during the Miss
Universe competition.
For her national costume on Friday, Garcia showcased the ‘White Witch of Rose Hall’. The costume was done by popular design company Uzuri International.
“Dubbed the White Witch of Rose Hall, local folk legend has it that Annie Palmer ruled the 18th-century plantation with an iron fist and drove fear in the hearts of loved ones and enemy’s alike. Her iconic home, the Rose Hall Great House is a national heritage site in Montego Bay Jamaica and still stands magnificently today after almost three hundred years as a popular visitor attraction where many claim they have spotted Annie Palmer’s ghost,” was Iana’s caption describing the costume on social media.
While her caption was ‘cute’, social media users
were not impressed. Many were simply baffled, stating that the costume was
unsettling.
“So, we used the story of a cruel, wicked slave
owner as our heritage costume on an international stage… better you did dress
her up as dudus,” one user commented.
Another added: “Before unu do nanny of the maroons or some other upstanding woman that fought for our freedom unu do a slave owner who fought to oppress Jamaican slaves.”
In addition to questioning if any research was done before making the costume, many called for the post to be deleted.
What are your thoughts on this one, BUZZ fam? Do you think this will affect Iana’s chances in the Miss Universe pageant when it is held at the Tyler Perry Studio in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday, December 8?
