J’can born footballer Raheem Sterling named in Queen’s Birthday Honours list , becomes MBE
Jamaican born footballer Raheem Sterling was among a group honoured with new titles after being named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list on Friday (June 11).
Sterling was the recipient of the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to racial equality in sports.
The Manchester City forward reacted to receiving the title noting that it was a proud moment.
“Receiving this honour is a fantastic feeling and a proud moment – not just for myself but for my family and friends,” said Sterling
“I am grateful to have been recognised but my priority is to try to help to educate society and myself. If it doesn’t start from within, then there’s no way you can help others. I’m learning every day,” he added
The list features many famous faces and well-known names, including Liverpool captain and England midfielder Jordan Henderson who also became an MBE.
An MBE is an order of the British Empire award. It’s the third highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, behind CBE which is first and then OBE.
It is awarded to someone for making a positive impact in their line of work.
The Birthday Honours List 2021 is the most ethnically diverse list to date, with 15% of recipients coming from an ethnic minority background.
