10 takeaways from Carifta Games
The 49th Carifta Games provided a spectacular showcase of young Caribbean talent over the Easter holiday weekend. It was a welcomed return of the event after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
There were some teaching moments in Kingston. OBSERVER ONLINE compiled a list of takeaways.
1.Jamaica are still kings and queens of Caribbean track and field. A record 92 medals says so.
2.The Under-20 girls’ 4x100m relay world record 42.58 seconds proves that the altitude in Nairobi last year was not a factor.
3.The Bahamas team might not have been as strong this time around, but their Junkonoo band was a winner.
4.Jamaica won all eight relays, that is not normal.
5.There are areas where Jamaica must improve in; javelin and pole vault among them.
6.We also have very good technical officials here in Jamaica.
7.The Local Organising Committee could have used help from ISSA; some media reps never received accreditation.
8.No matter which meet is held at the National Stadium, internet is going to be an issue.
9.Girl Power! On the female side, Jamaica’s track and field is well served for the next generation.
10.One week after Champs rivalry pitted them against each other, it was good to see local track and field fans united under the Jamaican flag.
