SECOND Chance, the latest movie starring Spragga Benz, will have its red-carpet premiere at Carib cinema in Cross Roads on July 21. The occasion is slated to begin at 7:00 pm.

The US-based dancehall deejay said he expects the film to resonate with local audiences.

“Jamaica is and will always be my first home, so you can just expect the excitement which is bubbling inside of me right now. This is like performing on a big stage before my home crowd. And, based on the response I am getting abroad, this movie should be a hit in Jamaica,” Spragga Benz told the Jamaica Observer.

“I would really like for this movie to be seen by inmates in our correctional institutions — where so many find themselves and are trying to search for a second chance. Also, in our boys’ and girls’ homes where some of these juveniles make mistakes and also need a second chance in life… If we start from early to deal with our problems and to show others the mistakes they make through movies like Second Chance, then we would have helped positively to change lives,” he continued.

Second Chance tells the story of a qualified Rastafarian man who struggles to find a job in corporate America. Discouraged by his failures, he falls into a life of crime with old high school friends. Suddenly, a situation forces him to lean on his spirituality and religious upbringing to change his ways.

Directed by Jamaican-born Cleon James, Second Chance’s cast also features American actress Merlisa Determined, sound selector Tony Matterhorn, soca disc jock Barrie Hype, and Jodi Covington.

Spragga Benz, given name Carlton Grant, is popularly known for his breakout role in the cult classic Shottaz (2002), alongside Ky-Mani Marley and Paul Campbell.

“Shottas’ story surrounds a group of Jamaicans, caught in drug runnings abroad, [who are] deported back to Jamaica. They continued a life of drugs, guns and gangsterism. People gravitated to that movie because it was action-packed… That’s a very long time ago,” he said.

As an artiste Spragga Benz’s songs include Could A Deal (produced by Winston Riley), Girls Hooray (Steelie and Cleevie), and Turn Me On with Kevin Lyttle.

He is slated to perform at this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, St James, in July.
