Chanice Porter highlights Jamaican winners at ATL meet

A season’s best performance by long jumper Chanice Porter highlighted four wins by Jamaicans at Saturday’s Stars and Stripe Classic, a part of the American Track League series, held at Marietta High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Porter, intermediate hurdler Andrenette Knight and sprinters Shockoria Wallace and Rasheed Dwyer were all winners on the day.

Porter, who was second at the Jamaican National Senior Championships last weekend and qualified for the World Athletics Championships, jumped 6.55 metres to win the long jump, beating the 6.52m she recorded in Kingston.

Knight, who hit a hurdle and fell while leading the women’s 400m hurdles at the National Trials, possibly costing her a spot on either the World Championship and Commonwealth Games teams, rebounded with a 53.85s clocking, her second fastest time ever. Her personal best 53.39 seconds was set last month.

Tia-Adana Belle of Barbados was well behind in second place in 55.75, followed by Canada’s Noelle Montcam, who ran 56.67.

Marvin Williams equalled his personal best 49.60 seconds for fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles which was won by American Amere Lattin (49.04). Barbados runner Rivaldo Leacock was second in a personal best 49.49.

Wallace ran 11.25 (0.0m/s) to win the women’s 100m which saw a clean sweep of the podium positions by Jamaicans Natasha Morrison was second in 11.33 and Remona Burchell third in 11.34, with Kasheika Cameron placing sixth in 11.81.

Dwyer won the men’s 200m in 20.45 (0.1m/s) with his compatriot Mario Heslop third in 20.66.

Rusheen McDonald was second in the men’s 400m with a season’s best 45.43 and Demish Gaye third in 55.47. Both were behind South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk, who ran a meet record 44.58. The previous record was 44.62.

Tiffany James-Rose was second in the women’s 400m in 51.70, behind the United States athlete Na’Asha Robinson (51.54). Another American Shakima Wimbley was third in a season’ best 52.22.

O’Dayne Richards, who retained his National Championships last weekend, was third in the men’s shot put with a season’s best 20.47m. It equalled his season’s best from last year, and was better than the 19.91m he threw in Puerto Rico earlier this season.

New Zealand’s Tom Walsh won with 21.65m, while American Roger Steen was second with a personal best 21.47m.

Rajay Hamilton was third in the men’s 800m with 1:46.19 minutes, as Ghana’s Alex Amankwa won in 1:45.14. Mexico’s Jesus Tonatiu Lopez was second in 1:45.30.

LaFranz Campbell was third in the 110m hurdles with 13.58 (-0.43m/s) as Americans Paris Williams won in 13.53 and Wellington Zaza was second in 13.54.
